Who can assign a main images to a taxon?

Any project participant can assign a main images to a taxon.

How do I choose the main images?

You can assign one to three main images to a taxon. These images are selected from photographs of the given taxon or any of its subtaxa.

The main images of a taxon should be those that best show its characteristic features and make it easiest to identify it in thumbnails..

A few guidelines to consider when choosing your main images.

  • It is desirable that the subject of the main image in a certain position corresponds to the recommended subject (if the recommended subject is not defined, you can specify it so that the main images for related taxa are as similar as possible).
  • It is desirable that the generative organs (flowers, fruits) and leaves are clearly visible in the photo (this is often seen in the photographs of the tops of the shoots).
  • It is desirable if on the thumbnail you can see the characteristic features of the taxon that distinguish it from close relatives.
  • It is good if a photo of a herbaceous plant, in addition to individual organs, also demonstrates habit.
  • When choosing the main photo for families and other taxa of a higher level, it is desirable that it be taken from the type genus (for example, for Rosaceae from the genus Rosa, for Magnoliophyta from the genus Magnolia).

It is clear that in some cases it is impossible to fulfill all the requirements at once. Therefore, use your common sense when choosing the main image and remember: The best main images of a taxon are the ones that make it most easily identifiable!

How do I make an image the main one?

You can start choosing and assigning the main taxon image

  1. from the "Taxon details" page;
  2. from the "Set of images" page of the taxon.

If you are on the page "Taxon details".

  1. Browse through the set of images and select the one you want to be the main one.
  2. Click on the selected thumbnail and open the page with a full-size photo.
  3. Click on the link Icon "Make main for taxon" from the "Image" menu in the right pane of the page.
  4. On the page that opens, click on the positions in which this image will be the main one; if a new image is assigned to replace an old one, the previous image can be placed in a different position.
  5. Click the "Apply" button.

If you are on the page "Set of images" of the taxon.

  1. Browse through the set of images and select the one you want to be the main one.
  2. Click on the selected thumbnail or on the button Pencil to left of it.
  3. In the menu that opens, select the Icon "Set as main image" item.
  4. On the page that opens, mark the taxa (one or several at once) for which this image will be the main one.
  5. Click the "Apply" button.

How to remove the main image from a taxon?

It is impossible to remove the main image from the taxon; it can only be replaced by another one. In the case of moving the main image from one taxon to another, it automatically ceases to be the main one for those taxa, the number of subtaxa of which it ceases to be.
